Greenland is a self-governed territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, at the crossroad of various geopolitical interests in the region. After gaining Home Rule from Denmark in 1979, Greenland increased its autonomy since the introduction of the Self Rule Act in 2009. The plan is to give Greenland the possibility to develop its economy in order to reach a possible independence that will depend of various factors.
The evolving geopolitical context of the Arctic region, as a consequence of climate change, sees non Arctic states getting interested in the region, notably due to potential access to energy resources and maritime routes. Even if Greenland does not present any internal political risk, the study of future geopolitical scenarios in which the territory may be involved is essential to prevent Greenland and foreign investors from evolutions that could disturbed the fragile geopolitical balance of the Arctic region. That has been part of my PhD-thesis in Political Science, which mainly deals with the role and consequences of an independent Greenland in the changing Arctic.
Think Green - Think Greenland connects green growth and Greenland.
